Recommend A Book That Changed Your Life
This month we asked the TNB Team to recommend a book that changed their life. This was an extra fun prompt because we got to see some recommendations of children’s and young adult books that impacted each of them deeply as readers!
Below are the recommendations from each of our book sellers!
-
I read this as required reading when I was in elementary school, but I’ll never forget how much it made me feel understood. The characters didn’t have to look like me for me to feel like I was apart of them; they’re bonds with each other as the kids from the wrong side of tracks, their harshness towards the world and their “ops” but softness, understanding, and protection over each other, felt like me and my friends from my neighborhood. It was the first book to ever make me cry.

As someone who has dealt on and off again with depression her entire life, no book has made me feel more seen than The Bell Jar. Not only is it a beautifully written book, it’s one of the only books I’ve ready that really captures what it’s like in someone’s mind when you are in that deep state of sadness and despair. It’s a book I’ll re-read over and over again.

The Junie B. Jones series made me fall in love with reading. She wasn't afraid to be herself, giving girls the confidence to be silly, adventurous, brave and whatever else they wanted. Junie B. Jones was a book to look forward to reading in library class and before bed with my parents. From then on, I was hooked which is why Junie B. Jones is a book that helped change my life.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake has always stuck with me because it was the first fantasy book I read that had a CRAZY twist at the end! And it is full of amazing female characters! It's a YA fantasy that has magic, sisterly bonds/competition, and a little romance.
-
Percy Jackson and the Olympians was the first series I read as a kid. It introduced me to creative story telling, fantasy, and provided my first book “escape”. The book changed my perspective on reading and continues to be a great series!

This book is incredible for so many reasons. It’s dystopian, apocalyptic, science fiction and fantasy all wrapped in one. There’s the world saving plot and the chosen one is a mom trying to save both the world and her daughter. For fans who want a sci-fi/fantasy that will alter your brain chemistry, this is a must read.
