Grim Tidings by B.K. Borison: This is a cute, holiday romance featuring a grim reaper who no longer wants to be a grim reaper and a Guardian Angel who doesn't trust her at all. The two team up and form an unlikely pair while dodging the Department of Haunting and Spirits.
Anger Is Only A Shadow by Elizabeth Acevedo. This is a coming-of-age story told in verse following a young girl named Lil who is rebellious and spunky with a craving to be free. She's feeling pinned down more than ever after her latest juvenile arrest, which comes right as she feels some distance from her older brother at college. He's the only one who can understand her, and now the missed calls and strange texts have her needing to decide if she should stay where she is or put her future freedom on the line to save him.
Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel. This is a sci-fi dystopian novel set in LA in 2031, the first spring after the collapse of the U.S. A young woman heads to a party after the city's curfew is finally lifted, only for strange things to occur and the party's host to end up missing. This is a novel about the price of safety, the perils of the surveillance state, a requiem for a world not unlike our own.
Ashes At The Altar by LaDarrion Williams. This is the third book in a young adult fantasy trilogy that takes place at a magical HBCU. The series follows a young wizard named Malik who finds himself thrust into a magical world with a legacy he knew nothing about. The magical world is in a tumultuous period and ultimately he's the only one who can help save everything.
Never Say Die by Ke Huy Quan. This is a celebrity memoir by Ke Huy Quan, who is perhaps best known for his roles in The Goonies and Everything Everywhere All At Once. It touches on his story from a Vietnemese refugee all the way to being an 80s childhood star and later his Hollywood comeback.
Styx - The River by Nikita Gill. This is the second book in the Goddesses Of The Underworld series by Nikita Gill (we will have the first one, Hekate, there as well!). The firstborn child of Titans, Styx is revered as the first of her kind – until she is eclipsed and forgotten amid her scores of siblings, the Oceanids and the Potamoi. The story follows her as she carves her own path in the world as both a woman and a god.
A Spell of Heart and Havoc by Kristen Vale. This is a cozy, Queer fantasy novel following a half-dwarf thief who is assigned to be a fake body guard to a rich noble who has magical abilities she's hiding. Neither has any desire to be in the situation, but as they learn about each other, friction and attraction grows.
The Perilous Fight by Colin Kapernick. This memoir follows Colin Kapernick in his decision to kneel during the National Anthem in 2016 and the fallout in the years that followed. Kaepernick delivers his story with the same unflinching conviction that defined his most-watched moment, a single act of protest that changed American sports and culture forever. And ultimately, it is a story about the future we are all still fighting to build.
Mother Mary Comes To Me by Arundhati Roy. This book was published last year but is coming out in paperback this year. It's a memoir by a renowned author who details her complex relationship with her mother and how it shaped her life as both a writer and woman. Vibes: Freedom, thorny love, and savage grace
The Intentions of Thunder by Patricia Smith. This is another book that came out last year but will be available in paperback on this day. This poetry collection traverses the redeeming landscape of pain, confronts the frightening revelations of history, and discloses the joyous possibilities of the future.
