Oh, You’re Reading Again Book Club

In May we will be reading ON EARTH WE’RE BRIEFLY GORGEOUS by Ocean Vuong. This story is a letter from a son written to his mother who can’t read. Throughout the letter, the writer unearths family history rooted in Vietnam and allows him a doorway into parts of his life his mother had never known. It’s as much about the power of telling one’s own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard.

We’ll meet to discuss this book on May 28 from 6-7 p.m. Join us in person at the store or via Zoom

New Release Wine Pairing

Join us for another new release wine pairing with our favorite partners in crime, Hex! On June 9 we will be at Hex Coffee & Natural Wines at Camp North End with 7 incredible new releases, all of which will be thoughtfully paired with a natural wine for you to sample. Throughout the evening you'll be told about each of the books and wines selected, with time to sip and chat in between. Your ticket price includes 7 one oz pours of wine, 10% off select wines at Hex, and 10% off any books or bookish items purchased at the event. You can purchase tickets here: https://www.thatsnovelbooks.com/shop/p/new-release-wine-tasting.

The books featured at this event will include:

Daughters of the Sun and Moon by Lisa See: A historical fiction novel following three Chinese women as they arrive in Los Angeles in 1870, all with very different goals, in a city that is very anti-Chinese. Themes: friendship, bravery, struggle.

Transcendent by Laverne Cox. In this memoir, Laverne Cox shares her childhood trauma, her transition, her body image issues, her search for love and her experience as a trans woman in Hollywood. Themes: healing, trauma, fight for equality.

The Missed Connection by Tia Williams: This contemporary romance featuring a high powered, no nonsense casting director who hits it off with a mysterious man on a plane, but they're separated before they exchange information. She begins a global search to find this man, even hiring a handsome detective who complicates things further. Themes: Spicy, flirty, fun. Extra fun: we will have SIGNED copies available!

The Summer Girlfriend by Kristina Forrest: This is a contemporary romance featuring a fake dating plot between two adults trying to get back on their feet. Soon, a weekend agreement turns into an entire summer, and Noelle and Jeremiah will have to keep their hearts in check, or else it’s sink or swim for them both. Themes: Summery, light, romantic.

Atmosphere Paperback Version by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Okay, this technically isn't a new release, but the book is coming out on paperback and it's really beautiful, so we'll celebrate it anyway! It follows a woman who is one of the first women to join NASA and go into space. While she's achieving her dreams, she's falling in love with another woman in the program and trying to hide it from everyone so they don't lose their positions. Themes: Adventurous, dramatic, a rollercoaster of emotions.

Harvest Season by Brynne Weaver: This is the second book in a series, but don't worry - we'll have the first one there as well. The story follows a serial killer and a hit man seeking revenge who call a truce even though they want to kill each other so that they can instead take care of a true crime junkie trying to solve a murder. Themes: Dark, suspenseful, intense.

You Won't Forget Me by Mazey Eddings: This is a queer romance featuring two bandmates who end up hooknig up right before tour, only for some drama to get in their way. Now they're forced together for a summer-long tour and have to decide whether it's worth it to risk everything. Themes: Gay

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke: A popular "trad wife" influencer on social media has everything made, until she wakes up one day in the year 1805, having to actually live a hard existence. Historical fiction with time travel.

One of You by Erin Adams: A horror/thriller novel about two girls after their mother's unexpected death, and their mother's strange friend, who shows up at the funeral and seems to know everything about them. Then, strange things keep happening.

Rites of the Starling by Devney Perry: The second book in a romantasy series, this one follows a young woman separated from the man she loves as she attempts to save the five kingdoms she rules over.

American Fantasy by Emma Straub: This fiction/romance follows a middle aged woman on a cruise ship with her favorite boy band from the 90s as she rediscovers herself and befriends a member of the band who's just as lonely as she is.

Love By The Book by Jessica George: This book reads like a love story, but it's about the platonic love and friendship two women foster when they bump into each other at a bookstore at the lowest times of their respective lives, and how they help one another keep going.
