Read-A-Thon With That’s Novel and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation

Join us in kicking off Banned Book Week by participating in our Read-A-Thon Fundraiser for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation!

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Book bans and challenges have only increased since then, threatening access to all types of stories, but in particular diverse stories.

We are committed to open access to all types of stories, and we’re so proud to have a local library system which champions that as well. It’s why we’re teaming up with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation to host this read-a-thon in hopes of bringing awareness to book bans and challenges while raising funds for the incredible work they do.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Create a profile with us at BetterWorld: https://thatsnovelbooks.betterworld.org/campaigns/read-thon-thats-novel-books-char/new-participant

  • Once your profile is created, have your friends, family, coworkers and strangers pledge donations to you based on the number of pages you’ll read with us on October 4.

  • On October 4, come by That’s Novel Books and participate in our in-person read-a-thon event from 11:30-4:30 p.m. You can bring any book(s) you’d like to read; they do not need to be banned! (Don’t worry - we’ll have built-in breaks throughout the day, including a snack/coffee break and a stretch break with a local yoga teacher.)

  • We’ll also be raffling off a prize basket you can purchase tickets for during the event as well as giving a prize to the individual who raises the most money once 4:30 p.m. hits!

Outside of creating a participant page on BetterWorld, there is no registration or fee to attend!

Can’t make it but still want to help? Make a direct donation to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation here.
